A clip-on plate for the user panel and a light beige colour scheme with rounded styling suggest some similarities between the HP C4180 and the Lexmark X5470. This is also a two cartridge printer. But that’s where the resemblance ends. The HP has a t...

  • Silly design flaw which causes unfocussed edges on paper larger than A4, scanning position unexpectedly reversed, minor print banding...
  • This limitation is the C4180’s near-fatal flaw. When an item to be scanned is not weighted the edges of the scan are fuzzy and out of focus. This is, frankly, silly and hard to ignore. If you can live with that fiddly inconvenience, the C4180 has a...

At first glance the HP Photosmart C4180 is very compact for an MFD, but once you make allowances for the hefty power brick and the paper tray that extends a fair way out of the front, its actually not that small, although it will fit neatly on a shelf...

For us this machine is a compromise to far, even at this great price...
  • Small footprint, great price, easy to use, compact...
  • Best print mode is not "Best" enough, software installation provides problems, scanner hood not vertically articulated, paper feed reservoir only takes 100-sheets, paper delivery only 20-sheets.

The C4180 offers a decent value printing, scanning and copying solution, but it is let down by some rather fiddly procedures for loading paper and new ink cartridges.
  • Very quick photo printing.
  • Prints remain wet for some time. Fiddly photo paper tray. No Pictbridge support.

This All In One is functional in design however when the job is to print, scan and copy appearance is less important than delivering the goods and this it does with the added plus of six ink quality.
